What is e-learning?

e-Learning is the name given training to courses that are accessed electronically. The courses are typically delivered from a website which you login to. Because the website is accessed via the Internet it can be accessed at any time. The e-Learning courses are not intended to replace the existing classroom training you receive, but enhance the opportunities available to you. There may be times when you need to quickly refresh your memory about a topic or only have a couple of queries which do not require you to attend a full training session or there may be mandatory courses you are required to complete within a set time frame.

Do I need my Managers permission before starting a course

That depends. Most staff will be able to do the e-Learning at a time to suit them, but in some service areas you might need to inform your manager that you intend to do a course and block out time in your diary to do so (e.g. those who work on a rota basis). The learning resource centre is available for use as drop in days Monday and Friday (no booking required) if you wanted to complete the course away from your desk..

What courses do I have to do?

Every year there are mandatory courses that everyone must complete (e.g. Data Protection, Health and Safety etc). We will publicise these courses when they are available, letting you know the date they must be completed by.

How should I go about choosing a course?

Usually you should discuss the courses that will most benefit your personal development and those that meet your performance management objectives with your line manager. Some courses are designed as quick refreshers or as a point of reference. You may wish to browse through the courses on offer by going to the Find Courses block which will provide you with a range of categories of courses.

Do I need to do any preparation before starting a course?

Before starting any course you should make sure you have a clear space in your diary and you will not be disturbed. You should also check the course length and ensure you have adequate time available. To access the courses, you will need to enable pop ups. If you have not already done this, go to the Browser menu bar and click Tools. Scroll down to Pop-up Blocker and select Turn Off Pop-up Blocker.

How do I access a course?

Go to the Find Courses on the top right hand side of the Homepage, this will provide you with a drop down featuring a range of categories.

What if I want to stop working through a course and return to it later?

The benefit of the eLearning is that you can revisit a course as many times as you like in order to complete it. However, we recommend most courses should be completed within two sessions. To exit a course at any time, click on Menu, located in the bottom left corner of every page, which will take you back to the course contents. Click on Exit, to leave the course and return to the Course Homepage. Your course progress will be saved and will be available the next time you log in.

How do I know if I have completed a course?

As you work through the course a menu bar on the top right hand of the screen will show you your progress through the section of the module, please see below

Once you have completed a section the view button on the homepage of the course will change from blue to grey, please see example below:

The My Courses box is available on the left hand side once you have logged in. By clicking on My Complete Courses, you will see a list of courses you have completed. By clicking on My Incomplete Courses, you will see a list of courses that are still incomplete.

Will anyone else see any quizzes or tests that I have completed?

No. Where there is a requirement for you to complete a quiz or test, the result cannot be accessed by others. However, a management report may be produced at a later date to identify test results.

How can I access video or audio content when I don’t have sound on my device?

Some laptops and PC’s don’t have speakers but you can still listen to audio content using headphones that have been supplied to you – just plug them in to the headphone socket. There should be a sound icon in the bottom right of your screen, as shown in the graphic below. Click on it to make sure your sound isn’t muted and that it is at an acceptable volume for you

Can I access eLearning via a tablet or smart phone from home?

Yes, the new eLearning site is responsive to the type of device you are using and will adapt the content to your device type.
